Eco-friendly shipbuilding

Eco-friendly shipbuilding is one of the plans for responding to international environment regulations and for preserving the domestic environment. It is a part of the human effort to hand the clean and sustainable environment to future generations. Since air pollutants wereseverely emitted in the shipbuilding area, the necessity of eco-friendly shipbuilding has been recognized globally and developed countries have developed technologies. These days, a variety of eco-friendly shipbuilding has been demonstrated and operated. To respond to the global issue, our research institute has researched a diversity of eco-friendly shipbuilding since long ago and will continue to conduct research to secure original technologies.

Marine Leisure

Marine leisure equipment means the vessels used for leisure. It is categorized into non-powered paddle boats, engine-based power boats, and sail yachts propelled with wind.
The applied technologies of marine leisure equipment includes design engineering technology, a variety of advanced technologies (e.g., parts & materials, mechatronics, electric navigation and communications), and aesthetic and sensuous interior technology. Therefore, the government designated marine leisure equipment as one of 100 strategic products based on technologies, and focuses on its technology development to grow the marine leisure industry as a new growth engine in Korea.

ICT convergence

ICT convergence technology newly draws a lot of attention in the shipbuilding and marine industry in terms of the creation of a new and high-added-value in the 4th industrial revolution. The technologies based on ICT convergence are developed in various fields, including Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), unmanned ships, safe navigation, maintenance, and smart shipbuilding.

Production technology

Southwest Office of Research Institute of Medium & Small Shipbuilding tries to establish an aluminum small vessel development support center for setting up the small & medium business support systemthat supports design, production technology and performance test evaluation technology for aluminum small shipbuilding business.

Shipbuilding components

The organization supports CAE analyses (e.g., thermo flow analysis, structural analysis) for the designed shapes of core parts, which are requiredfor marine leisure vessels and small & medium vessels, such as water jet, portable propeller, fluid coupling, fuel supply system, mooring rope and lifting system.

Traditional ships

Traditional ships as a core source of marine cultural heritage, include Jounseon (cargo ship), Geobukseon (turtle warship), Panokseon (warship), Hwangpo dotbae (Hwangpo sailing boat), and Joeseontongsinsaseon (diplomatic ship for the Joseon envoy to Japan). Research on traditional ships is aimed at finding, preserving, and passing down Korean traditional shipbuilding technologies. Based on the wrecked ships discovered in the sea and Korean traditional ships and on a variety of literature, basic design research, performance analysis, and shipbuilding supervision are conducted.
