Eco-friendly High Added Value

Eco-friendly shipbuilding is the technology for responding to international environment regulations and for preserving the domestic environment. It is a part of the human effort to hand the clean and sustainable environment to future generations. Since air pollutants were severely emitted in the shipbuilding area, the necessity of eco-friendly shipbuilding has been recognized globally and developed countries have developed technologies. These days, a variety of eco-friendly shipbuilding has been demonstrated and operated. Korea, the shipbuilding power in the world, makes an effort to solve the problem of environmental pollution through the development of eco-friendly vessels in line with global efforts. To respond to the global issue, our research institute has researched a diversity of eco-friendly shipbuilding since long ago and will continue to conduct research to secure original technologies.

Research on eco-friendly vessels

  • An eco-friendly vessel is defined as the one that can reduce environmental pollutants emitted when conventional fossil fuels like diesel are used.
  • Eco-friendly shipbuilding technology is researched in short-term, mid-term, and long-term plans in order for the maximum effect with the application of science and technologies.
  • Short-term technologies: To reduce pollutants of fossil-fuel vessels (e.g., fuel efficiency navigation, pollutant capture and reduction system, demonstration through the introduction of the technology of near future)
  • Mid-term technologies: To reduce pollutants more than short-term technologies (e.g., hybrid technology, eco-friendly fuel, alternative fuel and marine energy based technology, demonstration with the application of long-term plan based technology)
  • Long-term technologies: Based on pollution-free emission technology (e.g., electrical/hydrogen vessel technology, innovative propulsion vessels)

Electric Propulsion Vessel Technology

  • Electric propulsion vessel technology as a pollution-free emission technology is expected to become the final technology in the vessel field. Electric propulsion vessels have the limitation in the point that they need to use limited energy sources.
  • This research institute does the best to secure original technologies, including full electric vessels (long-term technology), hybrid vessels (mid-term technology), and alternative fuel vessels, and conducts multiple studies, including the research on the establishment of the concept of electric propulsion vessels applicable at present.


Development of safe and welfare type fishing boats

Domestic deep-sea and offshore fishing boats are severely deteriorated. Therefore, the government performs the next-generation safe-welfare type fishing boat project in order to secure competitiveness of fisheries.
Therefore, we develop hull forms for the reduction in navigation costs of fishing boats and safe fishing, research fishing equipment, fishing system, fleet adjustment, and conduct other kinds of R&D.
